Daily Hong Kong

The hotel we stayed at was attached to the convention center complex in downtown Hong Kong. All the buildings are connected by skybridges. We found a McDonald's where we ate breakfast most days there as it was wayyyyyy cheaper than the hotel. I also went there for dinner one day while Mike was on mainland China. On my way I came upon this group of protestors. It was very organized and peaceful. They had a leader that would shout the chant then the rest of the group would repeat it. They did it a few times in English then in Cantonese. I couldn't resist getting a picture, of course I wasn't the only one stopping for the photo op.
Since I was on my own I could really enjoy the shopping there. One day I went to a place called the Ladies Market. It was one very long street with stalls on either side. I discovered that most of the Asian faces that I was seeing there were from mainland China. They come over to shop in Hong Kong because there are more goods, better selection and better prices. I picked up a couple of small items there that day. Mostly just wandered around and enjoyed the atmosphere.
The day before we left I went to what was most likely my favorite place to shop. It is called the Jade Market. There are two buildings that are warehouse style places. They were filled with row upon row of these stalls selling all kinds of Jade. Most of the money Mike gave me to spend was spent here. We had agreed that we would not use the credit card unless it was a very upscale and reputable place. Therefore Mike had gotten some cash and gave most to me to enjoy myself. Well in the Jade market I did.
The final morning I went to a place called Hong Kong Arts & Crafts. It is a large building that had loads of crafts made by locals. This was a very expensive place. I very much enjoyed walking around and seeing everything. I did have to give in to the urge and purchase two pieces of fabric that I hope to someday have made into a traditional Chinese dress and jacket.

That was mostly what my trip to Hong Kong was like. Mike thinks he may be going back more often. If he does I may just have to tag along a time or two to see what else I can find worth seeing there.

Hong Kong

Early this month, shortly after I returned from the states, Michael had a business trip to Hong Kong. We decided that I would go along to see the country. It was a great trip. The first night there Mike and I saw a little of the city together, then he worked the rest of the week and I took in the sights alone. It was great fun and I would love going again.

Here are a few pictures of the trip. This first one is the view from our hotel window. It was rated a 5 star hotel and very nice. Probably a little over classed for this southern girl, but still a great time. That first night we decided to visit the highest peak in Hong Kong. It is called Victoria Peak. You get to the top by a tram or funicular. Here is a picture of the tracks before we started up. It was very steep and only leveled out at the stops along the way.
These next two pictures are views from the top of the peak. It was really beautiful. We had a great view of the harbor. While on the top we ate at a little noodle shop. The food was very good. They only give you chop sticks to eat with, so we had fun learning how to use them. After dinner we went to a gelato shop. They had some of the most unusual flavors of ice cream. One was Strawberry and Basil. We each had a double scoop of gelato to enjoy.
These last two pictures are from Hong Kong Park. Directly across the street from the tram station was this park. It was simple beautiful. They had an aviary but it was closed when we went. There were ponds, an amphitheater, it was just really beautiful and pleasant to walk around. It was a great start to our 4 days in Hong Kong.
