Ephesus is situated between two hills which were once at the end of a bay of the Aegean sea. The city dies out when the harbor silted in. Now the city is about a mile from the coast.
Down the street from the small Amphitheater is the library. It was a most impressive site. There had been some restoration done here.
Mainly the front is all that is left.
The arch way on the right of this picture lead to a market place beside the library.
This is the entrance to the market area.
Here are some closer shot of intricate stone and marble work that was done.
The main amphitheater was huge and still somewhat intact. It would seat about 30,000 people. This picture is from the stage looking up at the seating.
This is the walkway to enter the theater, again narrow and low.
This is looking down from the upper seats. This is looking out at the street leading up to the amphitheater.
This is looking back at the amphitheater from the street. You can get a sense of how hugh it really was.
